The U.N. Security Council on June 10 accepted its first decision endorsing a cease-fire plan aimed toward ending the eight-month Israel-Hamas battle in Gaza.
The vote on the U.S.-sponsored decision was 14-0, with Russia abstaining.
The decision welcomes a cease-fire proposal introduced by President Joe Biden that the United States says Israel has accepted. It calls on Hamas, which initially stated it considered the proposal “positively,” to just accept the three-phase plan.
It urges Israel and Hamas “to fully implement its terms without delay and without condition.”
The battle was sparked by Hamas’ shock Oct. 7 assault in southern Israel that killed about 1,200 individuals, primarily Israeli civilians, and noticed about 250 others taken hostage. About 120 hostages stay, with 43 pronounced useless.
