One man died and one other was in hospital on Saturday in Australia after a whale struck and flipped their boat throughout a fishing expedition, authorities stated.
Police stated one man was pulled unconscious from Botany Bay, off the coast of Sydney, and later died, whereas the opposite was taken to hospital in a steady situation, police stated.
“A whale has been involved. Whoever would have thought that would have occurred, it’s terribly tragic,” stated New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley.
State Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib stated it was “an absolute freak accident”.
The boat “was likely to have struck or been impacted by a whale breaching, causing the boat to tilt, ejecting both men”, police stated in an announcement. It didn’t establish the whale’s species.
Australia’s intensive shoreline hosts 10 massive and 20 smaller species of whales. While human deaths attributable to whales within the area are uncommon, Australia and neighbouring New Zealand are hotspots for mass whale strandings on seashores.
Eight Danes have been rescued in June when their sailboat capsized within the Pacific Ocean after a collision with one or two whales.
