Govt bans sale of 23 ferocious dog breeds due to rising attacks: Check list

New Delhi: Amid rising instances of canine bites within the nation, the federal government has directed states to ban and breeding of a number of canine breeds together with Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler amongst others.

The Centre has issued an inventory of 23 canine breeds and requested states to cease their breeding and sale. 

Centre in a letter to all of the states, UTs, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying have requested them to sterilised the talked about canine breeds.

The Government stated it has obtained representations from residents, citizen boards and Animal Welfare Organisations (AWOs) to ban a few of the breeds of canine from maintaining them as pets and different functions.

The panel has recognized 23 breeds of canine, together with blended and cross breeds, as ferocious and in addition harmful for human lives.

List of canine breeds banned by the Centre

Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerboel Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog and Caucasian Shepherd Dog are among the many breeds sought to be banned from the Centre.

Other breeds embody South Russian Shepherd Dog, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf Dogs, Canario, Akbash Dog, Moscow Guard Dog, Cane Corso and Bandog.

“… the above dog breeds, including crossbreeds, shall be prohibited for import, breedings, selling as pet dogs and other purposes,” the federal government letter stated, quoting the suggestions of the professional panel.

The Centre has printed the Prevention of Cruelty to the Animal (Dog Breeding and Marketing) guidelines, 2017 and the Prevent of Cruelty to Animal (pet store) guidelines, 2018.

In the letter, Joint Secretary within the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying O P Chaudhary stated implementation of the foundations is vested in native our bodies and state animal welfare boards in addition to the Department of Animal Husbandry.
