Mona Lisa & The Blood Moon movie review: Visually satisfying but thinly plotted

Film: Mona Lisa And The Blood Moon
Cast: Jun Jong-seo, Kate Hudson, Ed Skrein, Evan Whitten, Craig Robinson, Lauren Bowles, Serene Lee, Cory Roberts
Director: Ana Lily Amirpour
Rating: 2/5
Runtime: 106 min.

This movie loses heft within the first jiffy itself. We see a younger incarcerated lady escaping jail/Mental asylum by the use of her telekinetic powers. Now for those who simply considered it, you’ll query how she acquired into being incarcerated within the first place. You received’t discover any solutions right here. The movie is a visible expertise at greatest. There’s no plot and the script is devoid of depth.

In the primary 30 odd min the lady Mona (Jeon Jong-seo), after escaping, encounters drunk ladies who lend her sneakers and a few cash, has a run-in with a drug vendor, then a cop, meets up with a stripper Bonnie (Kate Hudson)who dances at a strip membership on Bourbon Street, at a fast-food restaurant. The stripper takes her into her residence the place she lives along with her younger son and thereafter, believing that she could also be exploited, leaves once more – this time with the stripper’s pre-teen son. This is principally her journey after escaping captivity. How she navigates the world outdoors after a decade of being locked in? What is left unexplained although is whether or not she developed these supernatural powers whereas in captivity or had all of them alongside? Mona is wilful and by no means fearful.

The narrative has little to say apart from current the ridiculous in an appealingly campy manner. There’s an entire lot of fashion within the presentation however no substance. The scripting is woefully week. Other than a number of surprising moments, every little thing else is predictable. There’s no again story, characters don’t have another dimensions apart from the cutout like representations you’re uncovered to right here.

Jeon Jong-seo does effectively to remain mysterious and harmful and Kate Hudson is simply there doing her bit to remain within the image. Neither of the performances matter.

Ana Lily Amirpour’s imaginative and prescient is exclusive. The soundtrack and cinematography are interesting. It’s the helmer’s ingenious visible language that’s on present right here. Deep and shiny colours lend the movie a rave-like psychedelic high quality. The dreamy, trippy lighting and peculiar angles make it seem to be there are nuances right here that aren’t so apparent.

The music is an eclectic mixture of EDM, rock and a number of other different genres – thus lending weight to the trippy expertise.

Set in among the sleaziest environs of New Orleans that is an indie fable, a fantasy that’s each lurid and violent. There’s no human emotion right here that may get you to take a position your consideration on one thing so gimmicky and showy.
